Debeli Samuraj was a Punk/Hardcore band active from 1994 to 1998. The band was formed in the village of Stanišić, near Sombor, in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. In its earliest days, the band performed under the name Demokratizacija Palice. The original lineup consisted of: Jovica Računica – drums, Zlatko Zlatković – guitar, Nikola Zlatković – vocals, Željko Klarić – vocals, Jovan Zagorac – vocals and Dimitrije Stojanac – vocals. Shortly after, the band changed its name to Debeli Samuraj, and the lineup evolved into: Jovica Računica – drums, Zlatko Zlatković – guitar, Željko Klarić – vocals, Nikola Zlatković – vocals and Mario Čanković (from Sombor) – bass. With this lineup, the band recorded its first and only album: “Svako ima pravo na zivot. Na svoj zivot imam pravo samo ja!” (Everyone Has the Right to Live. Only I Have the Right to My Own Life!). Before the band split up, one final lineup change occurred: Dušan Ristić (also from Sombor) replaced Mario Čanković on bass.
The album “Svako ima pravo na zivot. Na svoj zivot imam pravo samo ja!” (Everyone Has the Right to Live. Only I Have the Right to My Own Life!) was recorded in late 1996 and early 1997 at Studio DRUM in Novi Bečej. It was released as a DIY cassette edition under the band’s own label, “U se i u svoje kljuse” (Rely on Yourself. DIY or Die) publishing. The cover artwork was created by Nesha Doomsday Graphics, and the release included a printed booklet with lyrics and artwork (Download booklet in PDF). A total of 150 cassette copies were distributed through the DIY punk distribution SKEPTIKOS, run by the band’s guitarist Zlatko Zlatković. An additional 150 printed covers were sent to friendly DIY punk distributors across Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, and Bosnia, who duplicated the tapes and booklets and further distributed the album within the regional underground scene.
Deeply rooted in the 1990s DIY Punk/Hardcore scene, the band members not only played music but also organized concerts in Stanišić and Sombor, including two editions of the punk festival “Proleće” (Spring) in Stanišić, bringing together bands from Sombor and the surrounding underground scene. They were also actively involved in the DIY community through fanzines and other bands: fanzines SKEPTIKOS (Zlatko Zlatković, Mario Čanković), KOPRIVA (Nikola Zlatković, Jovan Zagorac), NO FILTHY NUCLEAR POWER (Željko Klarić, Dimitrije Stojanac); distribution via SKEPTIKOS Distribution (Zlatko Zlatković); and bands including KOPRIVA (Punk / Jovica Računica – drums, Željko Klarić – guitar, Nikola Zlatković – bass, Jovan Zagorac – vocals), BITLSI (Grindcore / Zlatko Zlatković – drums, Mario Čanković – guitar), KIFELE (Noisecore / Zlatko Zlatković – vocals/guitar, associate member), and UNUTRAŠNJI BUNT and ARGO (Punk/HC / Dušan Ristić – drums).
Following the band’s dissolution, some members continued playing in other projects: ANGER IS A GIFT (Hardcore, Sombor/Novi Sad, 1999–2006) – Zlatko Zlatković (guitar), RASPASHOJ (Punkrock, Sombor, 2005–2006) – Zlatko Zlatković (guitar), Nikola Zlatković (vocals), BOMBER (Street Punk, Novi Sad, 2012–2014) – Željko Klarić (bass).
Intro text from the booklet that came with the album “Everyone Has the Right to Live. Only I Have the Right to My Own Life!” (1997)
This booklet comes with a cassette featuring a printed cover and labels. If you paid more than 10 DIN (That would be around €3 today) for all of this, postage not included, you’ve been ripped off.
What you are reading right now is meant to serve as the introduction to the booklet accompanying our first (hopefully not last) self-released cassette. As such, it represents the closing of the first link in a long chain that we fully intend to keep building. That first link covers our work from November ’95 until we entered the studio on January 8, 1997. The band existed before that period, but serious work only began in November ’96, after the lineup change — when Paja moved to vocals and Čankus joined on bass.
It took a lot of ambition, willpower, time, money… but the fact is — we did it. We didn’t allow the lack of equipment, the inability to rehearse regularly (simply because we didn’t live in the same town), or a number of other obstacles to defeat us. We are living proof that if you truly want to do something, you can do it. Of course, it takes sacrifice, effort, and determination. We hope our example gives some of you the strength to create something on your own. Our experience has no moral authority. It’s basically a synonym for mistakes. Hopefully you’ll be smarter than us and learn from other people’s mistakes — meaning ours.
The material contains 14 songs, including two instrumentals and one cover of Oi Polloi (“Nazi Scum”). Considering that we are not professional musicians and that this was our first time in a studio — and only for 10 hours (mainly due to financial limitations) — we are more than satisfied. If we were to record it again…
As you’ve probably noticed, the lyrics are in Serbian. We do not support the idea that speaking the language of the place you live in is some kind of nationalist statement. Any such interpretation, believe us, is rooted either in chauvinism or in plain ignorance. For those who don’t understand Serbian, translations are included — so no one is left out.
When it comes to the lyrics, they are not just backing tracks for riffs. They express our thoughts and attitudes about society and life within it. We don’t want to impose our views on anyone. We simply want you to hear what we have to say — and if you agree, you can accept it, or develop your own perspective. After all, as the album title says:
“Everyone has the right to live. Only I have the right to my own life.” Of course, our freedom and our lives should never threaten the freedom of others.
Hatred, weakness, death, violence, dissatisfaction, envy, wars, nuclear testing, uncontrolled deforestation… all of it comes from human beings. Sadly, it is the harsh reality that surrounds us. People are what they are — we can’t change humanity — but we shouldn’t forget that everyone can improve themselves. There is one part of the world you can certainly improve: yourself. A person is born blind, but seems to die short-sighted. We want to offer people the other side of what the media feeds us daily and to be — if we cannot change the system — at least an alternative to it.
They can tie us up, torture us, put us in chains — but if our spirit is healthy, our thoughts cannot be destroyed. And thoughts are the most powerful weapon in the fight against this twisted system. Respect for people and love for one another should be a constructive force.
Finally, we invite everyone who reads or listens to this to get in touch (addresses are somewhere in the booklet). Let’s not allow honest communication to be blocked by stupid divisions based on appearance, music styles, or anything else. If you want to criticize us, praise us, argue, or simply make new friends — write to us. That’s it for now. We hope you’ll hear from us again through future releases. All band members, besides Debeli Samuraj, are involved in other bands, making fanzines, running distribution… Enjoy.
We would also like to thank and send greetings to the Stanišić and Sombor HC crew and to everyone who helped in any way (you know who you are). To you who bought this, taped it, traded it — and to the global DIY/HC/PUNK scene for endless inspiration.
Joso (for covers, stickers, and tons of other things), Neša (for the drawings), and Miloš (for computer work) deserve to be named — because without them, this wouldn’t look the way it does.
The End.
Naravno uz malo odricanja, volje i truda.
Kraj.
Song Lyrics
DOSTA
ENOUGH
Religious, national and social divides push us to take the wrong steps in our lives / Stupid wars and even dumber states building walls of hatred between people and races / So I raise my voice against all of this what we need is peace and freedom, not myths / No matter the faith or the color of skin – EQUALITY FOR ALL / There’s no one to save me, no one to call no one will help me except myself after all / All it takes is willpower and persistence the hunger to win — and victory’s my resistance / We have to stop and think it through, stand up to injustice, see it through / Fight so tomorrow can be better than today and that’s why I scream: I’VE HAD ENOUGH! / I’ve had enough of stupid wars, pathetic politicians, blood-soaked profiteers / I pity the tortured animals, broken dreams and innocent tears / And after this song, everything stays the same, but I won’t become like them — no way / All I can do is wish you all good luck or maybe go to church and light a candle for fuck’s sake
MRZIŠ ME / NE ŽELIM
YOU HATE ME / I DON’T WANT
You want me crawling, begging there to be your loyal fucking slave / That’s something you will never get, I won’t beg I won’t kneel / I’m not one of those people who sell their soul that cheap / I’ve got dignity and you won’t take that from me / You hate me ’cause I want freedom, you hate me ’cause I want peace / Hate me as much as you want I’ll be the one who beats you / I don’t want to rot in a sick world’s mind / I don’t want blood on these hands of mine / I don’t want to laugh while someone breaks / I don’t want hate when I can love instead / / I don’t want
ODLAZITE
THEY’RE GONE
They left with faith in God marching across an empty battlefield / They’ve gone and they will never come back again / Hungry for glory, thirsty for blood with weapons slung over their shoulders / They’ve gone and they will never come back again
VOJNIK
Izbezumljen ka cilju trčim uz združen krik i režanje tiho / Bes mi moćne mišiće grči, više me neće sprečiti niko / A onda se čuo i prvi krik, odmah se srušilo i prvo telo / Stao sam i zapitao se: Ko me je osudio na svo ovo zlo / Čudim se sebi zbog poniženja, boli me glupost i strašno menja / Bio sam samo poslušan pas, dok nisam čuo prve žrtve glas / Ne znam zašto sam ovde, nisam hteo to / Ali ipak sam savesti mirne jer nikom ne nanesoh zlo / I na kraju kad prođe boj, izaću iz potaje da sa lanca skinem broj / A onda će dovesti, za borbe, nove pse i iz prikrajka smejaće im se
SOLDIER
Frenzied, I run! Screaming, growling, muscles tight! No one’s gonna stop me! / First scream! First fall! Who sent me to this hell? / Humiliation burns me! I was just a dog… Until I heard the victims’ voice! I don’t know why I’m here! Didn’t want this… / But my conscience is clear, I harmed no one! / After the battle… I’ll step out of the shadows,
take the numbers off the chain! / New dogs arrive for fights… And from the sidelines, they’ll be laughing as they die in the ring!
ZBUNJEN I RANJEN
CONFUSED AND WOUNDED
Confused and wounded, I lie in the trench, around me — screams, suffering and pain / It feels like I’ll never see the sun again, it feels like I’ll never see freedom again / I won’t say goodbye to life, I won’t make peace with fate / I lie in the trench, my wounds are rotting, counting the last days I’ve got left / The sun has long set for me I mourn a life that’s long gone / I am an animal without its herd brought down by a merciless hunter / Around me, worms circle — I’m nothing more than meat to be taken
NAZI SCUM (OI POLLOI)
Standing outsides the primary school gates, with their leaflets stirring up race hate / Creeping round in the dead of night, setting innocent people’s houses alight / They stab and kill in racial attacks, just how much more before you fight back? / Find them – Grind them – Grind them!! / Nazi scum – your time will come / A nazi rally planned for our town, but anti-fascists came from all around / Cleared the scum completely off the streets, showed the fascists can and will be beat / And when they tryied to to gather in Hyde Park, Anti-fascists again made their mark / On the brainhead boneheads – Who they wasted / We must clear the streets of nazi scum, make them safe again for everyone / No longer will we have to walk in fear of scum who have no place here / If we unite the battle can be won, stop the problem before it’s really begun / Find them – Grind them – Grind them!! / Nazi scum – your time will come
“VOLIM I JA VAS”
Ja volim svoga predsednika, ja poštujem njegova pravila / Ja sam za pandurski režim i kad me vijaju ja neću da bežim / Ja sam za, jer ja sam pošten, ja sam pošten građanin
“I LOVE YOU TOO”
I love my president, I respect his rules / I’m all for the cop regime and when they chase me, I won’t run / I’m loyal, because that’s what’s expected, I’m a model citizen
A FAILED IDEA
You’re gone now — and so are your ideas / Now you’re dead and everything is over / Who knows what it would be like if you were alive / Who knows what you’d be doing if you were young again / Your ideas collapsed along with you / Your way of thinking is gone / You wanted to fight for a better world / But this world has no cure / Your life is a failed idea
DROGA – PREVARA
DRUGS – A SCAM
You’re getting old, stuck here all alone who knows if you’ll see another dawn / Tripping over stupid shit all the time won’t admit that it’s all just lies / DRUGS – A SCAM / Chaos is running wild inside your head everything pisses you off, wanna smash it all / You hit the stuff just one more time pop the shit and suddenly it’s all okay / DRUGS – A SCAM / With your constant escape from reality you’ll never fix a damn thing / Look around at the people near you drugs will wreck them — and you too / You’re killing the creativity inside you doesn’t matter if it’s “in,” just fuck that trend / DRUGS – A SCAM / Every day’s the same shit for you the same fucked-up thoughts keep spinning / How to score, how to escape it all, how to get cash, how to get more dope / DRUGS – A SCAM
Mc OFF and DIE
Mc OFF and DIE
If you’re hungry and got cash Jjmp into a McDonald’s bash / All day long and all night too McDonald’s serves the best for you / Coke and milkshakes, Hot-dogs and Big Macs / Fast and tasty food surrounding you from all sides / Ronald’s smiling in every frame, offering menus, always the same / Irresistible, and oh so right McDonald’s has the best bite / Service is good, design is clean, finally eating like the whole world scene / Everything looks awesome and great but appearances sometimes lie / McDonald’s is destroying the ozone layer, cutting forests, causing soil erosion, beware / McDonald’s kills animals, drives third-world people to starvation / And while it hides behind a fake face, another species disappears without a trace / Hectares of forests turned to pastures, killing with the harshest measures / Grains imported from poor nations to make tomorrow’s burgers, no hesitations / While hundreds of people and children die of hunger every single day / What else do they need to do for you to see what’s being done to you? / Isn’t it enough already? Multinationals, fuck off! / Boycott McDonald’s!
ZAUSTAVIMO NASILJE
STOP THE VIOLENCE
In the darkness a dull sound is heard, a boot smashing into human bone / An innocent victim falls to the asphalt, with innocent eyes staring back at them / Is it just because of a different skin color, a different nation, or maybe your empty, frustrated hate? / And for such stupid reasons another innocent life has to be destroyed / Human stupidity has no end,
no one should die for someone else’s ideals / How long will you keep fighting over pointless reasons? We’re not animals battling just to survive / You use your boots instead of your heads, you turn to violence when you know you’re wrong / None of you can see past your own nose, nationalism is the symbol of your pride / The law of the strong rules among you,
those who don’t submit are crushed / You look like an army and you act like one, instead of thinking with your own minds / Why should hatred and violence exist alongside love and peace? / And why should such beautiful emotions be ruined by a bunch of idiots? / You show no respect toward the opposite sex, you stand for macho chauvinism / In life all you know is drugs and alcohol, ’cause sober you wouldn’t hurt others
